âThen we are completely stuck,â exclaimed Beatrice, despondently.
âThe dragons are sleeping now, arenât they?â I said. âSo perhaps there is another way through?â
Beatrice looked at me with wide eyes. âSurely you arenât suggesting we go through the pit, Daniel?â
Dr. Drake stroked his moustache thoughtfully. âI think Daniel may be right. Sometimes the least likely option is the one that leads to greatest success. If you look carefully, you will see; the guards tend to patrol the perimeter â not the heart of their camp.â
By now the last signs of activity in the pit were coming to an end. Even the men had piled up their tools and dragged away the last of the carts. Perhaps we would be able to sneak past the sleeping dragons without waking them, but we had only just started our descent to the pit when we heard voices approaching from below. I froze. Alexandra Gorynytchka appeared. She was talking with a man who, from the way he was dressed, looked like he was the pit foreman, and was followed by Flitz and six guards. It was impossible to hear what was being said, but Alexandra was smiling excitedly and clapping her hands. What if they had found the dragon dust that she was looking for already? I crept forward, trying to hear.
âStay back, Daniel!â hissed Dr. Drake.
Suddenly, to my horror, the rock I was leaning on slipped and tumbled down the slope, cracking and echoing as it fell. As it reached the bottom, a ghastly silence descended over the pit. Alexandra and her men turned and watched it roll to a stop.
âFor goodnessâ sake, Daniel!â whispered Beatrice. âTheyâll see us.â
âQuick!â hissed Dr. Drake. âFollow me!â
As we scrambled away from the edge of the pit, a party of Alexandraâs men began lumbering up the slope. But Flitz was quicker than the lot of them â and now he was nearly upon us.
I clutched Beatriceâs arm. âIf Flitz spots Dr. Drake, then Alexandra will know that heâs still alive.â
Beatrice nodded. âWhat can we do?â
âLetâs try to lead him the other way.â
We moved to put our plan into action, but it seemed Torcher had ideas of his own as usual. The chick let out an angry roar and sprang at the dwarf dragon. Flitz gave a screech and met Torcher in mid-air. The pair tumbled to the ground where they began to fight with tooth and claw, nipping and tearing and sending out wicked little jets of flame. But after only a few seconds, Torcher got the better of Flitz and pinned him down. He looked up impatiently.
âAlgrumble!â he croaked. âAlgrumble! Algrumble!â
âWhatâs he saying?â I asked Beatrice. By now Alexandraâs men were nearly at the top of the slope.
âFly!â exclaimed Beatrice. âIt means âflyâ. I think he wants us to go. Heâs got control of Flitz for the moment, and heâs trying to stop him catching sight of you know who.â
âBut what if Alexandraâs men catch Torcher?â
Beatrice pulled me away. âThey wonât catch him. Heâs too clever for that.
